Hand Crafted As seen in Wal Mart
How do you feel about this?
As far as factory work, I think it's pretty nice...
"Special glazing technique makes every piece unique"
On one hand I am pleased to see industry is trying so hard to make appealing glazes, and they are..there are some damn nice glazes on some of these factory pieces.
On the other hand it's upsetting that they can be made in China (and I don't knock those Chinese workers either, they work hard and have great skills) and then they're shipped here and are sold for only $3 each.
How do you respond to these?

Looks like they are running them through a drizzler upside down and calling it hand crafted
ReplyDeleteYes, I saw this ceramic line at Walmart. There is an even better quality "Hand Crafted" line being sold at Costco. I have no appreciation for this kind of stuff. There is just no life in them. They are like the Zombies of the ceramic world.
ReplyDeleteThe Ross store here has a bunch. I tell my students that it is great slipcasting work, but nothing beats a piece you have built with your own hands! They all love your piece sitting on my desk - many want to buy it from me.
ReplyDeleteMy response is why would you shop at WalMart...the evil empire?!
ReplyDeleteHow do I respond?? "Hughes Pottery it is!!" I at least know how you made it, I know it is hand crafted and I have met you!! Hand crafted means I get to meet the artist... I'm such a pottery snob now...
ReplyDeleteI anticipated this response :) and I am glad we all still have our souls.
ReplyDeleteMel...Thanks!
I think the term "hand crafted" is what irks me. They're using it to attach an illusion of quality that does not exist in mass produced items. When you get right down to it, I'm sure many mass produced items pass through workers hands as some point during their production. Does that make them "hand crafted"?
ReplyDeleteI think the same way when I walk through the faux fine art isle with the mass printed canvases.
ReplyDeleteIf Sam Walton were still alive I'm pretty sure the label would be a little different. For one thing it would say "Made In USA." But there is an appeal for these items; their price. Friends of mine have looked at these but refuse to buy them because they know there is better product from real potters out there. In any economy price matters, but value matters more.
